You do not need any prior electronics or radio experience to become a licensed amateur. The club runs classes and exam sessions locally when there is enough interest, and members are always glad to help someone study.
The three licence classes
| Class | Exam | What it gets you |
|---|---|---|
| Technician | 35 questions | All VHF/UHF privileges — repeaters, local nets, emergency comms |
| General | 35 questions | Most HF privileges — worldwide voice and data |
| Amateur Extra | 50 questions | All amateur privileges |
There is no Morse code requirement for any class. Most people pass the Technician exam after a few weeks of study.
Study material
The full question pools are public, and there are free practice-exam sites that draw from them. Work through practice exams until you are consistently scoring in the high 80s and you will be ready.
Local classes and testing
Sessions are announced on the repeater and on our Facebook page. To register interest, contact us — if a few people ask, we will schedule one.
Past session: June 2018 training and testing.
